The Met Ball is always the most fashion-forward event in the A-List calendar. It is hosted annually by Anna Wintour and some choice helpers, who this year included Stella McCartney, Salma Hayek and Colin Firth.
Celebrities with the most peacock-like tendencies always flock to the Met Ball, where outrageous outfits are actively encouraged, if not expected. Indeed this year the Ball honoured the late Alexander McQueen, launching the new exhibition of his life’s work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In tribute to McQueen, high voltage drama was de rigeur and outfits were constructed with sensation in mind. This year an excess of feathers, dazzling sequins and brocade adorned the red carpet dresses.
Such dresses usually require simple jewellery that offsets rather than distracts from the accents of the outfit. However, despite the dramatic clothing, jewellery still remains crucial to the ‘best dressed’ look. There was enough decadent jewellery to have our magpie eyes gleaming with excitement, with some surprising personalities representing jewellery this year.
Eva Mendes looked sensational in a blue Stella McCartney Grecian-inspired gown. Cinching her waist with a gold belt gives that all-important hourglass silhouette but it is the yellow gold bangle and earrings that pull this look together. Our Python-enamel Bangle has a similarly exotic feel for Grecian gowns or our Circle Link Hammer Gold Bracelet will jazz up a plain and simple shift dress.
Israeli model Bar Refaeli, a newbie to the fashion scene, makes an entrance in her striking gold-emblazoned strapless sheath. An outfit not easily forgotten, Refaeli really ups the ante of her dress with perfectly chosen jewellery. Turquoise earrings are an astute choice, lending the outfit an air of regality to rival Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra costumes.
Racking up fashion points to rival Ms Wintour herself, Emma Stone pairs her striking Lanvin floral dress with even more striking chandelier earrings. Stone proves that by sticking to one colour palette, every element of your outfit can be big and bold, to stunning effect.
The Met Ball is often referenced as the Oscars of the East but with the fashion-forward edge to match its New York location. Although nothing can rival the Oscars as a showcase of the most luxurious jewels, the styles often veer on the conservative side. The Met Ball really is the best opportunity to spot the latest trends in jewellery, straight off the catwalk. Here at PepperPink we take our inspiration from this, bringing you affordable interpretations of these trends without compromising on the luxury. You don’t need to be a celebrity to own fabulous jewellery!
